Disruptive Retainers

I had braces when I was 12. Glamorous, I know. I think that was about 7th grade, if I'm not mistaken. [Shudder.] What a bad year. Or let's just say middle school in general was bad.

After I got my braces taken off, the orthodonist installed [that word makes me sound like I'm a computer] two permanent retainers - top and bottom. This past summer, my top permanent retainer broke and was poking me in the cheek - so I did what anyone else would do: I pulled it out. Wow.

My orthodontist kind of got mad at me - "It was ripping my cheek up. What else was I suppose to do?"

He made a new retainer for me - a removable one. Have I worn it in the last couple of months? No. Did I wear it last night? Yes.

I woke up a total of four times last night because I rolled over, felt something hard and pokey underneath my shoulder, fished around for it in the dark, and realized I had popped my retainer out of my mouth in my sleep. Wow.

Raw talent.

  1. Ha I loved you in middle school. You were darling. Also, I have always wanted a permanent retainer on my top teeth instead of the removable one I have. You should tell me if you start having dreams about your teeth falling out or about having gum in your mouth that you can never spit all the way out. I always have those two dreams and I think it's because of my retainer.

  2. I am going through the same thing right now! I cannot sleep while wearing me retainer. I was given a promise of fixing a small gap, which I am bothered by, if I just wear it. You would think it would be such an easy task! Somehow, I will convince myself that I must wear it and then I will get my permanent one back!

  4. Hahaha, this is funny! I have a permanent top and bottom retainer, but I also have a top retainer to put in at night. I never wear it!! Oops! Glad to know I'm not the only badly behaved dental patient!

  6. I've heard about this happening so many times to people, but it has yet to happen to me. I'm kind of sad I can't have the experience... :]
